Auto Expert: Do your due diligence when shopping for – or selling – a used car

Our Fox Communities Credit Union auto expert explains how to ensure you’re covering all you bases when buying or selling a used vehicleMike Pastorelli

There is a lot of due diligence that goes into both selling and buying a used car, and I recently had an interaction with both sides while helping a Fox member buy a used car from a non-member. It all started while I was getting certain information from the non-member to complete the sale – a list that includes the seller’s name as it appears on the title and either their social security number, date of birth, or driver’s license number. Understandably, the seller was hesitant to give out that information without first ensuring this wasn’t some kind of scam. So, the seller called me to make sure both the member and I were legitimate. To alleviate any sort of worry, I suggested the seller find our main Fox number online to call and ask for me, but it turns out they already did that. In other words, this seller knew exactly what they needed to do to protect themselves and complete their due diligence. And since the member was working with me, all due diligence was taken care of.

So, the moral of this story is that no matter how trustworthy and legitimate a buyer or seller may seem, always double check. And never hesitate to reach out to me if you need any help.
