Identity Theft Prevention

How to avoid being scammed

Scam artists will attempt to get confidential information by sending out a message – via phone, email or text – that may seem to come from a legitimate financial institution. The phony message may instruct the recipient to submit personal information – such as account numbers, card numbers, and Personal Identification Numbers – often under a guise as simple as “to keep your account current.”

The following information is very important to know in order to avoid being scammed:

  • All financial institutions already have your information and would never ask for it.
  • Financial institutions will never contact you to verify or confirm your personal information because we already have it.
  • People should never give out their account number, Social Security Numbers, or any other personal information when replying to a phone call, email, or text message.
  • Do not open or reply to suspicious emails from unfamiliar senders. Delete them immediately.

You can also protect yourself from SMS security risks by following a these simple guidelines:

  • Never send your full  account number (or any other private information, like your password or PIN) via text message.
  • Check text messages for Fox Communities Credit Union’s unique short code, the “return address” phone number that identifies official messages. Don’t respond to messages that claim to be Fox Communities Credit Union,  but come from different or unlisted numbers.
  • Delete texts from  Fox Communities Credit Union after reading them to keep information about your account out of the wrong hands in case your phone is stolen.
  • Report a lost or stolen phone that has been setup for SMS banking to Fox Communities Credit Union and your wireless carrier.

Be reassured that like all credible financial institutions, Fox Communities Credit Union has proactive measures in place to help prevent losses to our members. To protect our members, we investigate all opportunities that aid in shutting down theses scam artists.
