ATM Skimming Timeline

On October 26, 2017, debit card withdrawal and purchase limits were restored to normal limits, except for a limited number of members whose cards are being replaced. We have identified the skimming activities took place from approximately mid-September 2017 to mid-October 2017, resulting in fraudulent ATM withdrawals between October 13, 2017 and October 21, 2017.

ATM skimming is being seen across the country. Unfortunately, this incident is only one of many that have impacted our area in recent years. We are continuing to take measures to prevent this from occurring. It is also important for members to remain vigilant when making card transactions at ATMs and other places with card readers, such as gas pumps.

If you detect any fraudulent ATM withdrawals, please notify us and we will work with you to get this corrected. Fox Communities Credit Union members are not liable for fraudulent ATM transactions.

Lastly, we want to offer a sincere thank you to our members for your patience and understanding over these last few weeks. The loyalty and support of our members makes Fox Communities Credit Union the financial institution it is today.

Tips to avoid becoming a victim of skimming/shimming:

  • Notice your surroundings. Check ATM machines for anything that looks out of place before inserting/swiping your card. Be suspicious if you see anything loose, crooked, damaged or if you notice scratches or adhesive/tape residue. If an ATM/card reader looks or seems suspicious, walk away. Report this to the financial institution or law enforcement.
  • Scrutinize the size of the card slot. When you insert your card, it should go in smoothly, without force.
  • Cover your PIN. When entering your PIN, block the keypad with your other hand to prevent a possible hidden camera from recording your number.
  • Review your accounts. Regularly review your account with Fox Communities Credit Union online banking or mobile banking and report unauthorized withdrawals or purchases right away.

At Fox Communities Credit Union, we take our responsibility to safeguard the personal information that you have entrusted to us, seriously. Because we value our relationship with you, we wanted to make you aware that we recently discovered that skimming devices had been placed on several of the credit union’s ATMs. We are approaching this with the utmost seriousness, and upon learning of the incident, we launched an investigation and notified law enforcement. While this review is still ongoing, we believe that this incident affected only those individuals who conducted card transactions at the subject ATMs from approximately mid-September 2017 to mid-October 2017. Please note any Fox Communities Credit Union member who experiences losses due to fraudulent transactions as a result of this incident is not liable for any fraudulent charges. If you detect any suspicious activity on your account, please notify us promptly at 920-993-9000. We regret any inconvenience or concern this may cause our members, and want to make you aware of the steps we are taking to address this incident and protect your information:

  • We are working with members who have experienced fraud or identified suspicious activity on their accounts, and we are deactivating their cards immediately.
  • We are in the process of reissuing cards to members who may have been affected by this incident.

It is important to note that at no time were Fox Communities Credit Union’s core banking systems compromised or impacted as a result of this incident. We want to assure you that safeguarding the personal information that our members have entrusted to us is of the utmost importance, and we have already begun taking measures to help prevent this type of incident from occurring in the future. As a best practice, we recommend that members remain vigilant to protect against potential fraud by reviewing your cardholder account statements. Important Notification – Debit Card PIN transactions

Due to an increase in fraud, we have reduced the limit allowed to be withdrawn from your account using your debit card PIN. The new limit is $100 per day whether it’s a ATM withdrawal or purchase using your PIN. We apologize for this inconvenience. Once this is resolved, we expect to raise the limits back to your normal setting.
